Pregnancy and Pain
I get asked on a weekly basis whether I work on children and pregnant women. My answer is always an enthusiastic YES! The main enthusiasm behind this answer is that these two groups often respond quickly to care and are generally more in tune with their bodies. For pregnant women, why do we see an increase in low back pain, and what can we do about it?
Weight is carried more forward during pregnancy, which can result in postural imbalances and extra stress on the spine and joints. Combined with increased hormonal release of Relaxin, a hormone responsible for allowing tissues to increase elasticity to allow passage of the baby, pregnant women can experience extra stress on the spine and joints.
Now we know why pregnant women deal with extra back and hip pain during pregnancy, what can be done about it? Medical intervention during pregnancy can be tricky, as medications can interact with the growing child. A more natural approach is the safer alternative. Staying active with low impact exercise such as yoga, swimming, and walking can help tissues stay moving and healthy. Wearing flat, comfortable shoes will also help avoid any extra stress on the low back brought on by pregnancy. Additionally, sleeping on your left side with a pillow between your knees will help decrease extra tension. And last but not least, see your chiropractor!
